Holy shit, what are you on? As someone whose mother is a midwife, let me tell you- it’s far, far, FAR fucking better to have a trained medical fucking professional there to help you through with a birth than to try to deal with it on their own. Most people don’t even know what position is best to give birth- flat on your back is one of the most dangerous childbirthing positions possible.

I know that, but the medical institution deliberately ignores it. The beds/tables they have in the average American maternity ward are designed to force women to give birth in that position.

As a matter of fact, midwifery is still illegal in some states, e.g. Missouri. This is the only option women in those states have.

Not only do I now want to lop his balls off so he can never have children, I want to slit his fucking throat. I genuinely love him as a human being: he’s smart, funny, handsome and matches my personality well; but he can be completely ignorant sometimes and acts like these, no matter who perpetuates them, are unforgivable and insulting to those who have experienced birth rape firsthand.

What the actual fucking fuck? Genital mutilation? You know, that’s kind of the equivalent of threatening to cut a woman’s clit off. I don’t give a shit whether you’re male or female or intersex, that is just not fucking on.

Circumcision is not the norm in the UK, and I’m pretty sure it’s not done in the USA without parental consent.

I did do my damn research, a whole lot more than you did, evidently. Hospitals didn’t even start asking for consent until the early 1970s, and some still don’t. Even if the parents refuse consent, doctors will look for any excuse to do the operation. There was a famous case a couple of years ago in Florida where the parents had refused consent both on paper and orally (6 times, I might add), and the doctor took the baby and circumcised him while no one was looking. The parents sued the hospital for medical battery; no word on the outcome. This is just one in a very long list of cases where hospital staff had deliberately defied the parents’ wishes. As I said before, in decades past hospitals didn’t even ask the parents if they wanted it done, they just did it automatically. It was included in the standard birth plan and there was no way to opt out; the parents were billed for it either way. In some parts of the country the medical establishment has had trouble adjusting; they still claim to cut all the babies as a matter of routine. They justify their actions by claiming they’re doing the boys and their families and even society as a whole a service by magically making the boy “cleaner” and immune to HIV, HPV and other STDs. (Yes, I know the actual studies they cite don’t have these precise claims; it hasn’t stopped doctors from manipulating the results.) The worst part of all this is the law is often on the doctors’ side; recently in California a new law was passed saying local governments cannot prohibit or restrict ANYONE from circumcising a male minor, no matter if parental consent was obtained or even if the practitioner has any medical training.

FYI I live in the United States, so I see all this stuff as it unfolds.

so this information prompted you to decide that you wanted to slit Stephen Merchant’s throat and cut off his testicles for sending his own baby picture to the small hospital he was born at. Don’t you think that’s a bit of an overreaction??

I know, I was like, okay, you’re getting really angry about circumcision when… you just advocated genital mutilation and death on a grown man… wut.

Also, that study that she cites is in dispute. I can’t think of anything more potentially dangerous than something going wrong, the mother panicking and in pain, and hurting the baby and the mother further in trying to birth it without hospital equipment that has been specifically designed to help mothers and babies over centuries of figuring out what doesn’t work. My mom has to help maneuver babies out who trap their shoulders in the pelvis every day, and if you aren’t really careful and know exactly what you’re doing, that could break their arm or collarbone. And nothing is more depressing than a newborn baby in a full-body cast, which- guess what!- you need to visit a hospital to have done correctly.

I also live in the USA, and generally have a pretty good idea of midwifery that goes on here. Stephen Merchant lives in the UK. Clearly UK and USA hospitals are linked and evil. Circumcision is really, really, really rare in the UK. I’m not going to debate the morality of circumcision, but it is NOT LIKE CASTRATION.

Also, that table is not ‘flat on their back’. I’m not sure what point she was trying to make with that table, when clearly it is at an angle to the floor and can be manipulated to be more obtuse if necessary.
