I am so disgusted by the “That’s what she said” jokes. They are so cisheteronormative, heterosexist, transphobic, misogynistic, transphobic, misandrous, and slut-shaming that it is just disgusting.

Today at school, someone said, “I think we can fit that in with the rest of them,” and then someone else was like, “THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID!”

Disgusting.

I teach everyone I meet to instead choose the non-offensive alternative:

“That’s what xe said.”

Using the socially accepted gender neutral pronoun XE, all of the disgusting things about this joke are taken out. The joke no longer implies that:

• it is a man and a woman having sex (heteronormativity, heterosexism)
• the woman is a whore (slut-shaming, misogyny)
• that all men have penises and all women have vaginas (transphobia, cissexism)
• that men are merely machines for having sex (misandry)
• that sex and relationships are between two people (polyphobia)

There are many very funny “That’s what xe said” jokes that are not transphobic, cisheteronormative, slut-shaming, misandrous, transphobic, anti-gay, homophobic, genderqueerphobic, transphobic, and heterosexist. For example:

“I had a good time last night.”
“THAT’S WHAT XE SAID!”

“The best kind of fun is consensual fun. ;)”
“THAT’S WHAT XE SAID!” 

“Xe(m) was(were) on me last night.”
“THAT’S WHAT XE SAID!”
